The Kalashnikov AK assault rifle design occupies a special place in the history of small arms in the world. It has been in service with the army of Russia and many other countries of the world for more than 70 years. Despite such a solid service life, this machine still meets the main requirements of the army, and its reliability remains unsurpassed until now. The Kalashnikov assault rifle is interesting to a huge audience of readers, many publications are devoted to it. At the same time, for seven decades of combat use of the Kalashnikov assault rifle, a truly exhaustive history of its creation has not yet been written, which does not correspond to the role of this weapon in the development of the domestic weapons school. This book is intended to eliminate this omission. The book describes the events from the early stage of M. T. Kalashnikov's creativity as a designer-gunsmith to his inclusion in the competition for the development of the machine gun in 1946, the launch of the AK-47 machine gun into mass production at the Izhevsk weapons factories in 1948-1948 and its adoption by the Soviet army in 1949. These events are covered taking into account a complex of tactical, technical, economic, military-political factors and other events that influenced the development of manual automatic weapons in the USSR in the early-late 1940s. The book is full of images of prototype weapons and other documentary and illustrative material that reveals the essence and course of the events described. The book contains a technical analysis of the experimental Kalashnikov assault rifles and assault rifles developed by other designers, images of their appearance and internal structure are given. Some of the weapons samples published in the book are presented to the public for the first time. The book is written on the basis of a unique collection of experienced Soviet automatic weapons stored in the Military History Museum of Artillery, Engineering Troops and Communications Troops. The documentary basis of the book's material consists of sources from the archival funds of the Military-Historical Museum of Artillery, Engineering Troops and Communications Troops, the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, other archives and museums of the Russian Federation, as well as from the Archive of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The book is recommended to all readers interested in the history of Soviet small arms.
